Mac solves crime against its own theft

I have just been reading an interesting story on the BBC site which details how Joshua Kaufman managed to track down the perpetrator of his stolen laptop. The story details how Kaufman used an app he had installed on his MacBook, named 'Hidden', to photograph the new "owner" of his laptop.

It is reported that Mr Kaufman initially felt that the Oakland Police Department (OPD) weren't interested in his case. However Joshua then began receiving images sent from the app of the suspect. Before long Joshua decided to create a blog about the theft and included the various images. The evidence collected by Mr Kaufman was supplied to the OPD, who used the information to track Mr Aldebashi, who can be seen to be happily using the laptop in various images. Mr Aldebashi later admitted to knowing that the laptop was stolen but wasn't charged with the initial burglery.

It goes to show that whilst prevention can go some way to stopping the theft tracking apps can be used to help find your devices even once they have gone missing. Apple provide their own tracking app for both iPad and iPhone devices.
